TEACHER SPOTLIGHT

ANGIE KINDER

Our teacher spotlight this quarter focuses on Angie Kinder, a 5th grade teacher at Nichols Elementary.  Though primarily a teacher, Angie also serves as the school’s Wellness Coordinator and Garden Coordinator.

When she’s not helping to produce excellent students, Angie and her husband Ted are busy raising three awesome daughters (one of whom is a future math teacher)!   You could also find Angie serving as an active member of the Praise Team at her church and she enjoys reading. If you see Angie out and about, make sure to say hello and ask about the amazing work she’s doing at Nichols!

Angie focuses mainly on teacher reading and math, however she strongly encourages her students to pursue careers in the STEM fields.  She frequently adapts her lessons to provide as much experiential learning as possible.  Currently, Angie’s students are receiving instruction in hands-on gardening, aquaponics, worm composting, and raising fish.  This experience has also included a visit from Amy White, a member of the Marshall University Sustainability Department, who shared her knowledge and wisdom about worms and their impact on sustainability.  Did you know worms don’t like loud noise, need moist soil and food, and they require a bed?

Students in Angie’s classes also participated a recent NASA Jr. Rocket Launch Competition, and their next big project will veer over into another discipline, as the Social Studies Fair is on the horizon.  Big things are happening with some of our youngest students in Cabell County!
